Former Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla’s Wife, Pi Lal Riliani, Passes Away at 82

Pi Lal Riliani, aged 82, wife of former Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, passed away on Saturday morning, 20 December 2025, at around 9:00 AM.

A respected resident of Zarkawt Veng, Aizawl, Pi Lal Riliani had been suffering from prolonged lung-related health complications. According to family sources, she was recently admitted to Ebenezer Hospital, where she breathed her last earlier today.

Widely respected for her strong sense of discipline and unwavering commitment to her principles, Pi Lal Riliani was regarded as one of the most influential women in Mizo society. She was a vocal advocate for women’s empowerment and a firm opponent of tobacco use. Her values, conduct, and devotion to family life made her a role model for many across the state.

Pi Lal Riliani married Pu Lal Thanhawla on 29 February 1969. She is survived by her husband, one son and three daughters, along with four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Her passing marks a significant loss to the state, and condolences have poured in from across Mizoram, remembering her life of dignity, service, and quiet strength.
