CHENNAI: “According to a recent survey, out of every 100 participants taking part in campus recruitments, only six manage to land jobs, while the rest get eliminated at va rious stages. The challenge today for the education system is to convert the rest of 94 candidates into employable individuals,” said University of Madras vice-chancellor Dr G Thiruvasagam, here on Friday.

He was speaking at the two-day event —Main Session of the Question Bank Workshop on Numerical Aptitude, Arithmetic Ability and Mathematics— conducted by the Staff Selection Commission, Southern Region.

The event saw 54 professors and teachers from various colleges and schools across Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh prepared with about 9,000 objective type questions to be used in various competitive examinations for Central government posts.

Dr Thiruvasagam said the National Knowledge Commission had recommended that all 459 universities in India should move towards
evaluating students at graduation and post-graduation levels using objective type questions, but regretted that progress was negligible. Though about 45,000 graduates and 20,000 post-graduates qualify from Madras University every year, their employability remained a huge concern, he added.

MANY FOR GOVERNMENT JOBS: SSC regional director Bhagya Devi pointed out that there has been a surge in the number candidates
applying for government jobs. She attributed it to the awareness initiatives undertaken by the Commission, coupled with the salary increase for Central government employees by the Sixth Pay Commission, and the slump in private sector jobs.
